Dragon Squad Teams work harmoniously to create & dance a dragon

Program outline

In China dragons are a symbol of good luck, possessing great power, wisdom, fertility and dignity. Dragon dance or pinyin: wǔ long is performed by a team who through cooperation and harmony, manipulate a long flexible colourful dragon mimicking the undulating movements of this mythical river spirit. Dragon Squad utilises the concept requiring teams to create this culturally recognised icon, the Chinese Dragon, from concept to performance.

How it works

In Dragon Squad teams must use creativity, innovation and project management skills to design and construct a dragon.  Then, work together to rehearse and perform their own unique musical score and choreographed dragon dance.

Design & Construction Phase

Firstly, individual teams design and construct a Chinese Dragon. The success of this phase requires ingenuity, creativity, project management skills and active communication. And, as each team member must be involved, leadership skills and role delegation come into play.  

Performance Phase

Equipped with musical instruments, each team choreographs their own Dragon Dance routine. Then, with their uniquely designed dragon, they cooperate in harmony to put on a display of dance and music. Points are awarded to teams for creativity, performance, and teamwork.

Finale

The winning team is announced at the end of the project.  And, as a testament to their commitment teams are invited to display their dragonheads back in the office as a reminder of the key learning from the event and their team’s successes.

Learning and development outcomes

Project planning, flawless execution and team creativity combine to make Dragon Squad a challenging and memorable program. Teams assess the task in hand then form specialist units to work in parallel before bringing all the elements together. The fluid team structure and cross-functional cooperation are keys to success. During the finale, each dragon dance is dignified and coordinated. The rehearsals consolidate teams while performances require exceptional leadership and teamwork.
